Essential Sensors every smart Home must have

Sensors in our homes are nothing new. House alarms have relied on them since the first electromagnetic systems became available more than a century ago.

However, with the growth of the smart home, sensors have become more prevalent. These days, you can find a plethora of detectors covering a broad range of uses and functions. For Smart home, here are some basic important sensors:

1. Motion Sensor

Smart home motion sensors will connect to a smart home hub and monitor a given area for movement. They generally sit next to doors and windows. Some can monitor open spaces both indoors and outdoors. They are configured to ignore pets to prevent false alarms.

The sensor can integrate with a camera and provide a real-time video feed of what’s going on in your home. You can set the system up to sound an alarm, send an SMS to your smartphone or alert the authorities. Much depends on the setup you choose.

As anyone with a burst pipe knows, water damage is one of the most expensive things to repair in a home. Nobody wants to deal with insurance companies. Unless you’re hypervigilant about recording all your receipts and keeping your photographs up to date, you are almost guaranteed to end up out-of-pocket.

Today I’ve got the smart solution with a budget-friendly sensor that sends an alert to your smartphone if it thinks there’s a leak in your house.

3. Doorbell Sensor

A doorbell sensor can start playing a live video feed from your doorstep when someone is there, even if the person hasn’t pressed the buzzer yet.

Get some peace of mind with Ring and SmartThings. When your Ring Doorbell button is pressed or motion is detected, SmartThings can send you notifications or trigger lights or alarms of your choosing. Note: Video through the Ring Video Doorbell is not yet available in the SmartThings app.

4. Temperature and humidity Sensor

The difficulty with older homes is the rooms often vary in temperature. The trick to that is to have smart heating sensors not only monitoring how cold it is in each room, but checking the external temperature, whether from weather websites or a sensor outside.

The temperature sensor can help get you through the summer. It can make your air conditioning turn on 15 minutes before you get home from work if it’s too hot, or get your smart thermostat to crank up 30 minutes before your alarm goes off on a cold morning.
